When Good Things Can't Save Us

Devotional
Imagine going to a doctor who could perfectly diagnose your illness but had no cure to offer. They could tell you exactly what was wrong, run every test, and give you a detailed report, but when you asked for treatment, they'd have to say, 'I can identify the problem, but I can't fix it.' This is exactly what the law does for us spiritually. The law is good - it's holy, righteous, and perfect. It serves as God's moral standard and reveals His character. But here's what it cannot do: it cannot save us. The law can point out our sin with laser precision, showing us exactly where we fall short of God's perfect standard. It can make us aware of our need for a Savior. But it lacks the power to actually transform our hearts or make us righteous. This is why trying to earn salvation through law-keeping is ultimately futile. The law demands absolute perfection - not just external compliance, but perfect thoughts, motives, and actions. Since none of us can meet this standard, the law actually places us under a curse. It's like being given an impossible test where anything less than 100% is failure. But God didn't leave us hopeless. What the law couldn't do - provide righteousness and life - Christ accomplished through His perfect life, death, and resurrection. He didn't come to help us keep the law better; He came to fulfill it completely on our behalf. The law was never God's primary method of salvation; it was always meant to point us to our need for a Savior. Today, rest in the truth that Christ has done what you could never do. He has perfectly kept the law and paid the penalty for your failure to keep it.
Bible Verse
'For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."' - Galatians 3:10
Reflection Question
How does understanding the law's limitations help you appreciate more deeply what Christ has accomplished for you?
Quote
The law exposes sin, but lacks the power to overcome diagnoses, but fails to heal. It will tell you what the problem is, but it doesn't have a solution for the problem.
Prayer
Thank You, Jesus, for doing what I could never do. Thank You for perfectly keeping the law and paying the penalty for my failures. Help me rest in Your finished work rather than trying to earn what You've freely given. Amen.
