The Religion Trap

Devotional
There's a subtle but dangerous trap waiting for every believer: trading relationship for religion. It happens when we start focusing more on external rules than internal transformation. We begin judging others by their appearance, their choices, or their spiritual performance. Suddenly, we're asking questions like 'Why does she dress that way?' or 'How can he call himself a Christian?' This shift from grace to judgment creates bondage that can be even more destructive than our former sin. Religion produces nasty attitudes, critical spirits, and self-righteousness - the very opposite of what Christ intended. When we operate in judgment, we've stepped out of the freedom Christ gave us and back into a prison of our own making. The irony is that people expect Christians to have good attitudes, but religious thinking produces the worst attitudes of all. We must guard against this trap by remembering that our freedom in Christ is meant to lead us toward love, not judgment.
Bible Verse
'You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.' - Galatians 5:13
Reflection Question
In what ways have you found yourself judging others instead of loving them, and how can you return to relationship over religion?
Quote
When we operate in the judging way, where I have stepped out of relationship into religion, and just as we were born bound in sin and the bondage that came with it, we're bound now in religion.
Prayer
Father, protect me from the trap of religion. Keep my heart focused on relationship with You and love for others rather than judgment and performance.
