The Pure Gospel

Devotional
In a world full of mixed messages, there's something refreshingly simple about the pure gospel: Christ crucified and risen, nothing added, nothing removed. Yet we're constantly tempted to complicate it. We want to add our political views, our cultural preferences, our personal achievements, or our religious traditions to the mix. We think, 'Surely Jesus plus my good works equals a stronger faith,' or 'Jesus plus my political stance makes me a better Christian.' But the truth is, Jesus plus anything equals error. The gospel doesn't need our additions to make it more powerful or relevant. When we try to improve on God's perfect plan, we actually weaken it. The Judaizers in Paul's day thought they were helping by adding Old Testament law to faith in Christ. Today, we face similar temptations with prosperity theology, therapeutic Christianity, or performance-based religion. But the gospel that transforms lives is beautifully simple: we are dead in our sins, Christ died for us, and through faith in Him alone, we are made alive. No additions needed. No improvements required. Just pure, simple, life-changing truth. This simplicity isn't weakness - it's power. It's not incomplete - it's perfect.
Bible Verse
'I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—' - Galatians 1:6
Reflection Question
What 'additions' to the simple gospel have you been tempted to embrace, and how can you return to the pure message of Christ crucified and risen?
Quote
The Gospel of Christ crucified in and risen, nothing added, nothing removed. That's the gospel.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I've tried to add to Your perfect gospel. Help me embrace the beautiful simplicity of Christ crucified and risen. Remove any false additions I've made and help me rest in the completeness of what You've already done. Amen.
