The Discipline of Discipleship

Devotional
The word "disciple" comes from the same root as "discipline." This isn't coincidence - true spiritual growth requires intentional practices and loving correction. Just as athletes need coaches and students need teachers, followers of Jesus need discipleship systems that help them mature in faith. Yet research reveals that only 5% of American churches have effective discipleship programs. This leaves many believers spiritually stunted, never moving beyond the basics of faith. We wonder why our Christian walk feels stagnant, but we've never submitted to the discipline required for growth. Discipleship isn't punishment - it's loving guidance that helps us become who God created us to be. It involves regular Bible study, prayer, accountability relationships, and yes, sometimes correction when we drift off course. Like a loving parent guides a child, God uses discipleship to shape our character and deepen our relationship with Him. The beautiful truth is that we don't have to change ourselves through willpower alone. As we submit to God's discipleship process, He does the transforming work in us.
Bible Verse
"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Reflection Question
What areas of your spiritual life need more discipline, and who could help provide loving accountability in your growth?
Quote
The word disciple also means discipline. We also, we all need discipline. Correction out of love.
Prayer
Father, help me embrace the discipline of discipleship. Surround me with people who will lovingly guide me toward spiritual maturity.
