The Fire That Refines

Reading:
1 Peter 1:6–7; Job 23:10

Devotional
Gold is not placed into the fire because it is worthless.

It enters the fire because it has value. The heat exposes and removes impurities so that what remains becomes even more refined.

Peter uses this picture to describe our faith. Trials reveal the genuineness of what we believe and can produce a faith that results in praise, glory, and honor to Christ.

Job understood this even while walking through tremendous loss. He declared:

“When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.”

Trials do not automatically create faith. Often, they reveal what is already there while giving God an opportunity to strengthen and refine it.

Pressure exposes fear.

Pressure exposes self-reliance.

Pressure exposes places where our commitment may have remained shallow.

But God can use those same moments to develop endurance, dependence, maturity, and trust.

The fire does not mean God has abandoned you.

Even in the fire, God is still at work.

Reflection
What might God be refining in you during your current season—fear, self-reliance, impatience, pride, or superficial commitment?

Take Flight Challenge
Write down one way your faith grew stronger because of a previous trial. Thank God for what He developed in you then, and allow that remembrance to strengthen your trust in Him now.

Prayer
Lord, I may not understand everything You are allowing, but I trust Your hands. Reveal anything in me that needs refining. Burn away what does not belong and strengthen what reflects You. Bring me through this season with deeper faith. Amen.
