Purpose of the Wilderness

? Reading
Isaiah 40:28–31
? Key Verse
Isaiah 40:31 — “But those who wait on the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…”
?️ Devotional
We love the promise:
“They will soar on wings like eagles.”
But sometimes we overlook what comes before the soaring.
Waiting.
Scripture connects renewed strength with waiting upon the Lord.
The wilderness is where the feathers grow.
It is where spiritual muscles are strengthened. It is where discernment develops, obedience becomes deeper, prayer becomes more than routine, and dependence upon God replaces dependence upon ourselves.
You may feel confined right now.
Perhaps the season feels too small. The waiting feels too long. You know God has placed something inside you, yet you cannot understand why the door hasn't opened.
But God isn't careless with preparation.
He is thorough.
An assignment that requires greater spiritual strength also requires deeper preparation.
What if the delay isn't punishment?
What if God loves you too much to release you prematurely into something your current strength cannot sustain?
The same God who sees where you are also sees where you're going.
He knows exactly what you will need when you arrive.
So don't despise what God is developing in the wilderness.
The strength you're gaining today may be exactly what keeps you in the air tomorrow.
? Personal Reflection
What spiritual muscle do you sense God developing in you right now?
Is it patience? Faith? Discipline? Forgiveness? Courage? Dependence? Obedience?
How have you been responding to that process?
? Practical Application
Identify one area where you have been striving in your own strength.
Write it down.
Then pray:
“God, I surrender my timeline, my expectations, and my need to control this. I trust Your timing.”
When anxiety about that situation returns today, repeat:
“I don't have to force what God is preparing.”
? Closing Prayer
Father, help me trust Your preparation. When I become frustrated with the wilderness, remind me that You see what I cannot see. Strengthen the areas in me that need to grow. Develop my faith, obedience, patience, and endurance. I surrender my timeline to You. Prepare me thoroughly so that when it is time to soar, I will be ready for where You are taking me. In Jesus' name, amen.
