Looking Up Instead Of Around

Devotional
In our fast-paced world, we're constantly bombarded with information and advice from every direction. When we face challenges or need answers, our natural instinct is often to look around us—to friends, experts, social media, or the latest self-help trend. But God calls us to a different response. In the book of Hosea, God confronted His people who were turning everywhere except to Him. They performed religious rituals while their hearts remained distant. They sought solutions from other nations and other gods, looking horizontally when they should have been looking vertically. This pattern continues today. When we need guidance, healing, or provision, where do we turn first? Do we immediately grab our phones, consult Google, or ask everyone's opinion? Or do we first quiet ourselves before God, seeking His wisdom and direction? The Lord wants to be our first resource, not our last resort. He desires to be the One we run to before exploring all other options. This doesn't mean we never seek godly counsel or use the resources available to us, but rather that we filter everything through prayer and God's Word first.

Bible Verse
"They turn, but not upward." - Hosea 7:16

Reflection Question
Think about the last significant decision or problem you faced. Where did you turn first for answers? What might change if you developed the habit of turning upward to God before looking around?

Quote
"The question we always have to ask is, where do I turn for my answers? And you don't need to be looking around, you need to be looking up."

Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I've turned everywhere but to You. Help me develop the habit of looking up first, seeking Your face and Your wisdom before consulting other sources. Teach me to recognize Your voice above all others. In Jesus' name, amen.
