Running From God

Devotional
We've all had moments when we've tried to run from something God has called us to do. Maybe it wasn't as dramatic as boarding a ship headed in the opposite direction like Jonah, but our hearts have been just as resistant. Why do we run? Often, it's because God's call challenges our comfort, our prejudices, or our sense of justice. Jonah didn't want to see Nineveh saved because they were Israel's enemies. He couldn't imagine extending mercy to those he deemed unworthy. Our resistance might look different. Perhaps we avoid forgiving someone who hurt us, hesitate to serve in a ministry that feels uncomfortable, or refuse to share our faith with a difficult person. Whatever form it takes, running from God's call reveals something about our hearts—our desire to remain in control rather than surrendering to His perfect will. But here's the beautiful truth: we can never outrun God's presence. He pursues us with relentless love, not to punish us, but to redirect us toward His purposes. When we try to flee from His presence, He follows. Not as a threatening force, but as a loving Father who knows what we need better than we do ourselves.

Bible Verse
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there." - Psalm 139:7-8

Reflection Question
What is God calling you to do that you might be resisting or running from? What fears or prejudices might be driving your resistance?

Quote
This story about Jonah is not so much about Jonah only, right? It's more about the relentless pursuit of God for his people. That's what it's really about. It's really saying, listen, God's going to do what God needs to do to get to you.

Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I've tried to run from Your call. Help me recognize the areas where I'm still resisting Your will. Thank You for pursuing me with relentless love, even when I try to flee. Give me courage to stop running and start surrendering. Amen.
