Standing Firm In Opposition

Devotional
When we truly begin to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, we should expect opposition. The early church faced intense resistance—from religious leaders, government authorities, and spiritual forces. Yet they stood firm, and the gospel spread like wildfire. In Acts 19, we see this dynamic at work in Ephesus. As Paul ministered in extraordinary power, a riot broke out. Those whose livelihoods depended on idol worship felt threatened by the gospel's advance. Yet Paul and the believers didn't back down or water down their message. Opposition often indicates effectiveness. When the kingdom of light advances, the kingdom of darkness pushes back. This resistance can take many forms—ridicule, rejection, persecution, or even internal doubts and fears. But God's power is greater than any opposition we face. Interestingly, God often does His most powerful work in the face of great resistance. As one pastor noted, "God loves to move when there is great opposition. He loves to embarrass the devil." When circumstances seem most challenging, God delights in displaying His power. This doesn't mean we seek conflict or controversy. But it does mean we shouldn't be surprised or discouraged when opposition comes. Instead, we can see it as confirmation that we're making a real impact and as an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power in even greater ways. Today, consider what opposition you might be facing as you follow Christ. Rather than retreating, how might you stand firm in God's power?
Bible Verse
"But Paul stayed on in Ephesus for some time. Then he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God." - Acts 19:8
Reflection Question
What form of opposition have you experienced when sharing or living out your faith, and how might viewing this resistance as an opportunity rather than an obstacle change your response?
Quote
You will be persecuted in some way, shape or form. People may come at you. It may be verbally, sometimes physically. But do not stop preaching the gospel if you have not started. Stand for the gospel. Stand for the truth. Stand for righteousness. Stand for justice.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of Paul and the early believers who stood firm in the face of opposition. Give me courage when I face resistance for following You. Help me to see opposition not as a sign to retreat but as an opportunity for Your power to be displayed even more clearly. May I stand firm for truth, righteousness, and justice in Your strength. In Your name I pray, amen.
