Dying To Live

Devotional
Jonah's three days in the fish parallels Christ's three days in the tomb—both point to a profound spiritual principle: before resurrection comes death. Before new life emerges, something must die. For Jonah, it was his prejudice, self-will, and resistance to God's mercy for his enemies that needed to die. Only after this "death" experience could he fulfill his calling with a renewed heart. Similarly, our transformation requires the death of our old nature—our selfish ambitions, comfortable prejudices, and stubborn self-reliance. This dying-to-self isn't a one-time event but a daily choice. Each morning presents new opportunities to surrender our will to God's. Each challenge invites us to respond not according to our natural inclinations but according to Christ's example. The paradox of Christian living is that true freedom comes through surrender, and abundant life emerges from death to self. When we cling to control, we remain trapped in our limitations. But when we surrender control to God, we experience His limitless power working through us. What parts of your old self is God asking you to let die today? What comfortable prejudices, selfish ambitions, or areas of pride need to be surrendered?

Bible Verse

"And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land." - Jonah 2:10

Reflection Question
What specific area of your life is God asking you to surrender control of right now? What makes this surrender particularly difficult for you?

Quote
Do you realize you gotta die before you can live? Do you understand? I don't think we really fully grasp the part about denying yourself.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for modeling the ultimate surrender through Your death and resurrection. Give me courage to die daily to my selfish desires and stubborn will. Help me understand that true life begins when I fully surrender to You. I release my grip on control and open my hands to receive Your direction. Amen.
