Celebrating Others' Success

Devotional
Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of Christian community is genuinely celebrating others' successes—especially when they receive the recognition, opportunity, or blessing we desired for ourselves. Yet this is precisely what God calls us to do. The Edomites not only failed to help Israel in trouble; they actively rejoiced in their downfall. The opposite of this attitude isn't merely refraining from celebrating others' failures—it's actively rejoicing in their successes. When someone receives a promotion we wanted, gets recognized for work similar to our own, or seems to be blessed in ways we've been praying for ourselves, our natural response might be envy or resentment. But God invites us to a supernatural response: genuine celebration. This kind of selfless joy becomes possible when we truly grasp that we're on the same team. In God's kingdom, another person's win is a win for all of us. Their blessing doesn't diminish what God has for us; there's no scarcity in His economy. Practicing this kind of celebration requires intentionality. It might mean sending a congratulatory message when it would be easier to remain silent, speaking well of others' accomplishments rather than minimizing them, or finding specific ways to support someone else's success. When we choose to rejoice with those who rejoice, we participate in God's work of restoration. We become agents of His kingdom where competition gives way to cooperation and where every gift is valued for its contribution to the whole.

Bible Verse
"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." - Romans 12:15

Reflection Question
Think of someone whose success has been difficult for you to celebrate. What might change if you began to view their achievements as a win for God's kingdom rather than a loss for you personally?

Quote
"Just think about how much unity and love would overflow in our lives if we truly rejoiced in each other's accomplishments. If we truly supported each other's gifts with no competition, no jealousy, no. Well, that should have been me."

Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I've struggled to celebrate others' successes. Transform my heart so that I can genuinely rejoice when others are blessed. Help me to see that in Your kingdom, we rise together rather than at each other's expense. Thank You for the unique purpose You have for my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
