When Others Suffer

Devotional
How do we respond when we see others experiencing hardship? The Edomites not only failed to help their relatives (the Israelites) during their time of need, but they actually celebrated their downfall. This response revealed the true condition of their hearts. God takes note of our attitudes toward others' suffering. When we stand by passively or, worse, take pleasure in someone else's misfortune, we align ourselves against God's heart. This is true whether we're witnessing global tragedies or personal struggles within our community. The call to compassion isn't just for those we like or those who have treated us well. It extends even to those who have wronged us. This doesn't mean we approve of harmful actions, but it does mean we refuse to delight in anyone's suffering. Jesus modeled this perfectly on the cross when He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Even in His own suffering, He showed compassion rather than vengeance. When we see others hurting—whether friend or foe—God invites us to respond with empathy rather than indifference or satisfaction. This might mean offering practical help, speaking words of encouragement, or simply being present with someone in their pain. Today, consider how you respond when you hear about others' difficulties. Do you feel a pull toward compassion or do you sometimes experience a secret satisfaction? God calls us to a higher way.

Bible Verse
"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." - Romans 12:15

Reflection Question
Think of someone whose suffering you've struggled to feel compassion for—perhaps someone who hurt you or whose choices you disagree with. How might God be calling you to view their situation differently?

Quote
"God does not look kindly on those who take pleasure or stand by and watch the misfortunes of others, whether it's nations or whether it's people. He doesn't want us to ever rejoice in somebody else's misery."

Prayer
Lord, soften my heart toward those who are suffering, even when it's difficult to feel compassion. Forgive me for the times I've been indifferent or even pleased at others' misfortunes. Help me to see people through Your eyes and respond with Your love. In Jesus' name, amen.
