Pride Comes Before a Fall

Devotional
Pride is a subtle enemy that can creep into our hearts without notice. In the book of Obadiah, we see God's judgment against Edom, a nation that believed they were untouchable because of their mountain fortress. They looked down on others from their lofty position, convinced no one could bring them low. But God had a message for them: "Even if you fly high like an eagle and make your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord." No matter how secure we feel in our accomplishments, positions, or possessions, pride blinds us to our dependence on God. When we begin to think we've achieved success by our own strength or that we're somehow better than others, we're setting ourselves up for a fall. God doesn't oppose us when we succeed—He opposes the attitude that forgets Him in the process. Humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less. It's recognizing that every good gift comes from above and that we are all equal at the foot of the cross. When we embrace humility, we position ourselves to receive God's grace rather than His resistance. Today, consider areas where pride might be taking root in your life. Are there relationships, achievements, or abilities that have become sources of unhealthy pride? God gently invites us to humble ourselves before Him rather than waiting for circumstances to humble us.

Bible Verse

"Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2

Reflection Question

In what areas of your life might you be relying on your own strength or achievements rather than acknowledging your dependence on God?

Quote
"The Bible says God resists the proud, gives grace to the humble. They were arrogant. They said, no one can bring me to the ground. And God says, oh, I'll bring you down. Listen, you're going down."

Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I've allowed pride to take root in my heart. Help me to see myself as You see me—loved, valued, but always in need of Your grace. Teach me to walk in humility today, recognizing that every good thing comes from You. In Jesus' name, amen.
