Emptying To Be Filled

Devotional
There's a simple principle in physics that applies powerfully to our spiritual lives: you cannot fill what is already full. Before God can pour His Spirit into us, we must first be emptied. This emptying isn't about becoming nothing—it's about making room for something greater. It's the process of removing everything that stands in the way of God's fullness in our lives: pride, unforgiveness, hidden sin, self-sufficiency, and worldly attachments. Repentance is not just feeling sorry; it's turning away from sin and turning toward God. Confession isn't just admitting wrongdoing; it's agreeing with God about the true nature of our actions. Surrender isn't just giving up; it's exchanging our limited resources for God's unlimited ones. When we truly empty ourselves before God, we create space for Him to fill us with His nature—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The transformation is not about trying harder to be good but about allowing God's goodness to flow through us. The beautiful paradox is that in emptying ourselves, we find fullness. In surrendering control, we gain true power. In dying to self, we find abundant life.

Bible Verse
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions." - Joel 2:28

Reflection Question

What might you need to empty from your life today to create space for a fresh filling of God's Spirit?

Quote
You cannot feel something that's not empty. So once we're emptying out to God. And what does that mean? It means repenting. It means turning away from. It means confessing.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, I recognize that I've been holding onto things that leave no room for Your fullness in my life. Today, I empty myself before You—my pride, my sin, my self-reliance, my unforgiveness. I turn away from these things and turn fully toward You. Fill the space I'm creating with Your presence, Your power, and Your character. Transform me from the inside out. Amen.
