Becoming & Doing

Devotional
The Christian life involves a beautiful balance between becoming and doing—between who we are and what we accomplish. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit focuses on our becoming. Through His presence, we're gradually transformed into the image of Christ. Our character, thoughts, and desires increasingly reflect Jesus as we yield to the Spirit's work within us. This inner transformation isn't optional—it's the essence of discipleship. But the empowering of the Holy Spirit focuses on our doing. When the Spirit comes upon us in power, we're equipped to do the works Jesus did. We can pray for the sick with authority, speak God's word with boldness, and demonstrate the reality of God's kingdom through supernatural signs. These two dimensions work together perfectly. Our becoming authenticates our doing, and our doing demonstrates our becoming. Character without power can be ineffective, while power without character can be dangerous. In Romans 12, Paul beautifully weaves together these twin aspects of the Christian life. He calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (becoming) and to use our spiritual gifts effectively (doing). Both are essential to a healthy, balanced Christian life. Today, consider whether your spiritual journey has emphasized one dimension over the other. Has your focus been primarily on becoming like Christ or on doing His works? How might embracing both more fully enrich your walk with God?

Bible Verse
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." - Romans 12:1-2

Reflection Question
In what specific ways has God been shaping who you are becoming in Christ, and how might He be calling you to step out in faith to do the works of Jesus in your everyday life?

Quote
The power helps you do. The present helps you become.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your work in my life—both in transforming who I am and empowering what I do. Help me to yield fully to Your presence that makes me more like Jesus, and to step out boldly in Your power to demonstrate Your kingdom. May my character and my actions both bring You glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
